What we see in Mason homes
The typical Mason home dates from after 1980, so it has some insulation already. What it usually lacks is air sealing: recessed lights, attic hatches, duct chases and top plates leak warm air into the attic, and the attic itself is often below today's R-49 to R-60 standard. Newer homes also tend to have ductwork and electric or propane heat, which makes them strong candidates for a cold-climate heat pump.
About 74% of owner-occupied homes in Mason heat with oil or propane, the most expensive fuels in New England per unit of heat. That is why air sealing and insulation pay back so quickly here, and why a cold-climate heat pump is often the next step: it can carry most of the season at a fraction of the cost of delivered fuel. Around 23% heat primarily with wood or pellets. A tighter house means fewer cords a winter, and a heat pump can take the shoulder seasons so the stove runs only when it is truly cold.
Housing figures: U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey 2020 to 2024 five-year estimates for Mason; heating fuel shares are for owner-occupied homes.
NHSaves rebates in Mason
Most of Mason is served by Eversource for electricity and none for natural gas. All of them are NHSaves utilities. If you heat with natural gas your Home Energy Performance rebate comes through none; if you heat with anything else it comes through Eversource.
On most Home Energy Performance projects the program pays 100% of air sealing and 75% of insulation, up to $6,000 per home, and your share can go on a 0% or 2% program loan. We assess the house, model it, file with the utility and take the rebate off the invoice. How the program works.
How much fuel a Mason home needs to use to qualify
| Fuel | Utility | Enrollment line | Qualifies outright |
|---|---|---|---|
| Heating oil | Eversource | 629 gallons | 943 gallons |
| Propane | Eversource | 954 gallons | 1,430 gallons |
| Natural gas | none | 871 therms | 1,306 therms |
For a 1,800 sq ft home in Mason at 8,064 heating degree days (estimated from the nearest weather station). Yearly fuel use at or above the enrollment line gets the utility’s enrollment form; above the higher figure the home qualifies with any utility. A wood or pellet stove counts toward the total. Pre-screen only: the utility’s calculator and the assessment decide.

Yes. We install cold-climate ductless mini-splits and ducted heat pumps across Mason and Hillsborough County, sized from a load calculation after the insulation work, with the Eversource heat pump rebate filed for you.
